Settle allows you to store Bills of Materials (BOMs) as part of your Universal Catalog. A Bill of Materials is the list of raw materials, components, and parts required to manufacture your products. You can think of the Bill of Materials as a "Recipe" for creating your product.

Settle imports unlimited levels of nested BOMs. In other words, we can support a use case for a BOM for a finished good, a BOM for a component, or a BOM for a component's component.

In this article, we will walk you through how to create and manage your BOMs using an actual product example.

Create a BOM

using a jar of peanut butter as an example

Prerequisites: You must have your raw materials added before creating a BOM. You cannot add them as you go.

For this guide, we'll walk you through adding BOMS through an example of a delicious jar of Peanut Butter that is made up of four parts: Jar, Lid, Label, and Fill. It is sold in three different sizes: 4 oz, 12 oz, and 52 oz.

Steps:

  1. To begin:

    • Select “Catalog” from the dashboard on the left side of your screen.

    • Click the “+ Add New Item” button on the top right side of your screen.

  2. Add the item details:

    • Item Name: Peanut Butter Jar

    • Unit of Measure: Jars

    • Vendor: Nutty Bliss Delight

  3. Next, scroll down and select “Properties” hit the “+ Add” button:

    • Fill out the relevant information including:

      • Property Name: Size

      • Values: 4 oz, 12 oz, and 52 oz

    • Hit the “Add” button.

  4. Add the SKUs for each variation:

    • PB-JAR-4oz

    • PB-JAR-12oz

    • PB-JAR-52oz

BOM Types

In Settle, we support three kinds of Bills of Materials- Kit to Stock, Kit to Order, and Production. This can be tracked under the BOM header for any catalog item.

Kit to Order: Kits are assembled after an order is received. The components are stored separately in the warehouse, and when an order is placed, they are picked and combined to create the kit SKU for shipping.

Kit to Stock: Kits are pre-assembled and stored as a single SKU. When an order comes in, the pre-built kit is picked and shipped directly, eliminating the need for further assembly. This method is especially useful during promotions or for products that require special packaging, such as value sets or gift sets, as the kits can be built in bulk rather than one by one.

Production: A Production Bill of Materials is used in the manufacturing process to define the components and raw materials needed to produce a finished product. Each production BOM outlines the required quantities of each part or material and the sequence in which they are assembled. This helps streamline manufacturing, ensuring that all necessary items are available for production runs and that the process is efficient and standardized.

Add a BOM to a catalog item

To add a BOM to a catalog item, ensure that all raw materials are already created within your catalog. For example, you should have individual items for each size of the Lid (4oz, 12oz, 52oz), Jar (4oz, 12oz, 52oz), Label (4oz, 12oz, 52oz), and Fill (4oz, 12oz, 52oz).

  1. Select “Add” under the header “Bills of Materials” on the Peanut Butter Jar details page.

  2. Next, select “Add Materials” and add the template for the peanut butter jar:

    1. This must include Lid, Jar, Label, and Fill (4oz, 12oz, and 52oz for each).

    2. By default when adding new properties to a Material, we default to a quantity of 1 but you can easily update this number.

  3. Double-check and make edits if necessary:

    1. In the example below, we've updated each of the BOMs associated with each size of the Honey jars. Ensure the right units are attached to the right variants.

    2. Hit the “Done” button.

  4. Next, you want to add another property:

    1. Scroll down and select “Properties”.

    2. Select “Properties” hit the “+ Add” button.

    3. Property Name: Flavor.

    4. Values: Honey and Regular.

  5. Hit the “Add” button.

    • You may see an error button pop up on your Peanut Butter Jar details page. This is to alert you that your BOMs are accurate anytime you’ve made a change to your product.

  6. To fix this error:

    1. Click “Edit” under the “Bills of Materials” header.

    2. Make sure the right units are attached to the right variants.

    3. Select the “Mark as Reviewed” button.

    4. Hit “Done”.
